Studying to be a personal trainer: the tarsals are connected to the phalanges
I’m currently on my third week of studying to be a Certified fitness Gym Instructor – which you have to be qualified in before you can train to be a personal trainer – and my first attendance weekend of practical sessions is looming fast.

So far, everything has been going well and I’ve found the studies really interesting. I’ve had the overwhelming feeling that I’m back at school, studying for my GSCE biology exams all over again, but I’m loving learning about the bones, muscles, respiratory system and energy systems of the body. There is a hell of a lot to take in, but there’s also something really rewarding about learning how our bodies work because everything I’m learning can be applied to myself and those around me. Rather than seeming really ‘heavy’, it all seems very practical and useful knowledge to have.

I have to admit I wasn’t feeling so confident in the beginning though. Three days before my course was due to start, I received all my study materials (course manual, muscle manual, course guide) in the post, followed swiftly by an email in my Inbox, informing me of the next week’s four ‘e-classes’ I would need to attend. In no uncertain terms, I did freak out. I worried I’d that I’d taken on too big a commitment to fit around my full-time job, that I wouldn’t be able to cope will all the studying and that my life would only consist of studying in every spare moment – goodbye reading novels, visiting friends, watching TV… from now on my nose would either be stuck in my manual or glued to the laptop.

I didn’t need to fear, however. Generally, I need to study for around 12 hours a week, and by using my journey’s to and from work to learn from the manual, I’m finding that I only need to find around six hours to complete my online studies, which is easy to do over a few evenings or the weekend. So I’ve still got plenty of time for a social life.
I’m also really enjoying the ‘e-classes’, which last for an hour but fly by and really help to consolidate my learning. I’ll explain what exactly ‘e-classes’ are in my next blog, but for now, just take my word for it that going back to ‘school’ is a lot more fun than it used to be.
